Erdogan wants private guards replaced

ISTANBUL Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the government to replace private security guards with police forces in the wake of two deadly shoot-outs in a week that sent shockwaves through the country, reports said Friday. Erdogan said that the ubiquitous use of private security firms to guard public buildings like courthouses but also hospitals and stadiums should be outlawed. I will suggest to my friends (the government) that they remove private security guards altogether (from public institutions), Erdogan said.

I believe it would be a historic decision, the Hurriyet daily quoted him as saying in a closed briefing on the presidential jet as he returned home from Romania. On Tuesday, two Revolutionary People s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) militants took a prosecutor hostage at an Istanbul courthouse and held him for hours before all three were killed in a shootout with the police. The two gunmen who took the prosecutor hostage had reportedly entered the giant Istanbul Caglayan Palace of Justice guarded by private security guards disguised as lawyers.

Cops: Shoplifting suspect charged after tussle with Stop & Shop security

A 55-year-old Bridgeport man is facing robbery charges after he allegedly shoved a security guard at Super Stop & Shop 1 , 1160 Kings Highway Cutoff, during an alleged shoplifting incident Monday afternoon. George Verras, of Morehouse Street in Bridgeport, was charged with third-degree robbery, third-degree assault and sixth-degree larceny. According to police, store security personnel said they saw Verras hiding $26 worth of merchandise, including a knife sharpener, kitchen tongs, Advil and a package of razors, and attempt to leave the store without paying.

After he was stopped, according to the report, Verras was walking with two security employees to the store’s office when he shoved one of them against the wall and ran off. The employee who got pushed called 911, while the other chased Verras into the parking lot and onto the property next door, where he was found trying to hide in some bushes. The items he had taken were found under a trash bin, police said.

Verras allegedly told police he pushed the employee and ran because he had panicked.

Bond was set at $750 and he is scheduled to appear April 13 at state Superior Court 2 in Bridgeport.
