Prince Albert police report third in-custody death in a month

The Prince Albert Police Service is reporting its third in-custody death in the span of a month.

On Nov.

7 just before 3 p.m., officers arrested a 33-year-old man on outstanding warrants without incident, a release from the service said. The man was transported to the PAPS detention area to await a court appearance. At about 7:30 p.m., police say the man was located unresponsive in his cell.

Paramedics in the detention area provided emergency medical care while an ambulance was on route. The man was transported Victoria Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Police are not releasing the man’s name at the request of family, the release said. An autopsy is scheduled for Nov.

9, 2021. The Saskatchewan Coroners Service and Saskatoon Police Service are leading an investigation into the death, and two independent observers have been assigned by the province to provide oversight. The in-custody deaths of a 29-year-old man and a 35-year old man are also currently under investigation.

The deaths took place within days of each other in October.

The 35-year-old was found unresponsive in a Prince Albert police detention cell on Oct.

11. The 29-year-old was pronounced dead on Oct.

12 , days after he was briefly in police custody at Victoria Hospital and went into medical distress.

The Prince Albert Grand Council has been in contact with the family of one of the men.

In response to the deaths, the PAGC has called for transparency around the investigation process , cultural sensitivity training and for police to address their organizational culture.
