Morecambe robbery sees cash security guard attacked and car smashed in getaway attempt

A cash security guard has been left with head injuries after a serious robbery near a Morecambe shopping centre. Officers from Lancashire Police were called to Glentworth Road West, Morecambe, at around 11.15am today (September 14) after receiving reports of a cash-in-transit robbery. It happened near the Westgate Shopping Centre, which is home to Co-op and the Post Office.

The security guard transporting a significant amount of money was stuck over the head with a weapon before being robbed of the money on him. Two men then got in to a car which left the scene. While fleeing, the car struck another vehicle.

Thankfully, the security guard did not require hospital treatment for his injuries. A manhunt is now under way to find the two culprits.

A spokesperson from Lancashire Constabulary said: “We were called to reports of a cash-in-transit robbery in Glentworth Road West, Morecambe, at 11.15am today (September 14). “It appears the male victim was struck over the head with a weapon before being robbed of a significant amount of cash.

“Two male offenders have then got into a car, which has struck a vehicle as it left the scene. “The victim, a man in his 30s, was treated at the scene by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment. “No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”

Cash-in-transit is the physical transfer of banknotes, coins, credit cards and items of value from one location to another.
