Suspect arrested by armed police after reports of a man shooting at ducks in south London park

A man has been arrested by armed police after reports of a man shooting at ducks with an air rifle in a popular London park. Police were called to the lake in Burgess Park in Walworth, south London, at around 9am on Sunday morning, officers said. Officers seized an air rifle as well as arresting a man on suspicion of possession of a firearm and class B drugs.

The man remains in police custody. A dead duck was found in the area, but police have not worked out if it died in the alleged shooting. A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Police were called at 08:59hrs on Sunday, 28 June to Burgess Park, to reports of a man shooting ducks on the pond.

“Officers attended and found two men who matched the description given. They were searched and one of the men was found to be in possession of a firearm. “A man, no further details, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and possession of class B drugs.

He was taken to a London police station where he remains at this time. “A deceased duck was found in the area, although it is unknown at this time whether it is linked to the alleged shooting.” Southwark Neighbourhood Inspector Tom Cornish said earlier on Twitter: “Armed police were in Burgess Park at 9am today after reports of two men shooting at ducks on the lake.

“An air rifle was seized and a man was arrested.

It is possible one duck was killed but we are not sure yet.”
