Fake reviews for unknown brands 'rife on Amazon' – The Times

The Amazon system of customer ratings is being undermined by a “flood” of fake five-star reviews for products made by unknown brands, according to researchers.

The consumer group Which? looked at hundreds of technology products in 14 categories, including headphones, dash cams, fitness trackers and smart watches, searching for telltale signs of suspicious reviews.

It found that the top-rated items were dominated by unknown brands, which had thousands of reviews that were not verified, meaning there was no evidence that a reviewer had purchased the product.

Many of the items had a suspiciously high number of five-star ratings that had been posted over a short time, which is another possible indication of fake reviews.
