Key Democrat seeks review of Kushner security clearance after Russia news

Reports that Jared Kushner, President Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, tried to set up secret backchannel communications with the Kremlin using Russian diplomatic facilities in December, when he was a private citizen and Trump president-elect, have reportedly shaken Kushner’s safe perch at the White House. Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.), ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called Sunday for a review of Kushner’s security clearance because, among other reasons, he did not disclose his backchannel overtures on his application form. White House officials over the weekend defended backchannel communications, generally, and Trump put out a statement on Sunday calling Kushner “a very good person” who is “doing a great job for the country,” adding “I have total confidence in him.” But White House aides say the new Kushner focus in the Russia investigation has strained a relatively bedrock relationship.

Trump marks Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery

President Trump laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, a remembrance of fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, then made his first public remarks since returning from a nine-day trip to Europe and the Middle East on Saturday. “We only hope that every day we can prove worthy, not only of their sacrifice and service, but of the sacrifice made by the families and loved ones they left behind,” Trump said, making a special mention of Robert Kelly, a son of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly who died in Afghanistan after stepping on a mine. He also generally thanked members of other Gold Star families, who have lost family members in war, and urged other Americans to thank them, too.

Germany’s Merkel: Europe can no longer ‘completely depend’ on U.S.

“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday in Munich. “I’ve experienced that in the last few days,” she added. “We Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands — of course in friendship with the United States of America, in friendship with Great Britain, and as good neighbors wherever that is possible also with other countries, even with Russia.” At NATO and G7 summits last week, European leaders bristled over President Trump’s refusal to flatly endorse NATO’s collective defense doctrine promise to stick to the Paris climate accord, plus his lecturing Europeans over NATO defense spending. The German-U.S. relationship has been a bedrock of post-World War II foreign policy, and Merkel is still “a deeply convinced trans-Atlanticist,” her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Monday. “Because trans-Atlantic relations are so important to this chancellor, it is right from her viewpoint to speak out honestly about differences.”

Sophia Coppola, The Square win big at Cannes Film Festival

At the 70th Cannes Film Festival, Sofia Coppola became the second woman in the festival’s history to take best director. Coppola won for The Beguiled, a reimagining of a 1971 film based on a novel by Thomas P. Cullinan, about a wounded Union officer in the Civil War who is found by residents of an all-girls boarding school. It stars Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Colin Farrell. The first and only other female director to take the honors as best director at Cannes was the Soviet director Yuliya Solntseva, who won in 1961 for her World War II film The Story of the Flaming Years. The Square, a Swedish- and English-language comedy, unexpectedly won the biggest award at Cannes, the coveted Palme d’Or.

Govt reviews Bimbilla curfew

The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has reviewed the curfew in Bimbilla Township from 8:00pm to 4:00am.

According to the Minister, the review of the curfew hours was on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council.

That notwithstanding, Mr. Dery disclosed that there is a total ban on “all persons in the Bimbilla Township and surrounding areas from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon.”

He therefore noted that any person found with the above will be arrested and prosecuted.

Background

Earlier this year, there was renewed chieftaincy clashes in Bimbilla leading to a refugee situation in Yendi.

Mr. Dery faulted the regent of Bimbilla for the intra-ethnic chieftaincy clashes in the area that claimed about 13 lives.

Speaking on the floor of parliament 22 February, 2017, he said the clashes were as a result of the regent’s flagrant disregard to warnings by both the Regional Security Council and District Security Council to defer installation of a sub-chief in the area.
