CLEARWATER, Florida Clearwater police have charged a 50-year-old man with a 2006 slaying that they say he tried to pin on someone else.

Kenneth Missey is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting 64-year-old security guard Bill Williams during a robbery at a Fairfield Inn.

Police say the masked robber shot Williams as he tried to come to the desk clerk’s aid.

They say Missey contacted detectives and Crime Stoppers after the shooting, claiming he had information that another man was the killer.

Detectives say he even sent them three rounds from the gun that shot Williams and then turned over the gun itself in hopes of getting a reward.

Detectives discovered, however, that the man Missey accused was in prison at the time of Williams’ slaying.

Missey has a lengthy criminal history for theft, fraud and sexual battery.

Since 2013, he has been serving a five-year sentence on a felony gun possession charge.
