Businessman among three held over guard killing

Police do not rule out the possibility that the killing was fuelled by a business deal gone sour.

security murderedGEORGE TOWN: Three men, including a businessman, have been detained to facilitate investigations into the killing of a security guard in Jalan Scotland here last night.

In the 9.30pm incident, the 51-year-old man, whose name was withheld by the police, was shot dead by one of two men on a motorcycle.

Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the suspects aged between 28 and 51, were nabbed separately in George Town and Butterworth early today.

He said one of the suspects was the victim s colleage, aged 51, who was picked up in George Town about 1am.

Following that arrest, we nabbed two others, namely a shop assistant and self-employed in Butterworth to assist in the investigations, he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Mior Faridalatrash did not rule out the possibility the killing was fuelled by a business deal gone sour.

The suspects have been remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations.

In the incident, the security guard was killed when he stopped his car at a traffic light junction in Jalan Scotland here.

According to Penang CID chief Mazlan Kesah, more than five shots were fired from the right side of the victim s vehicle, killing him on the spot.

A 54-year-old colleague, who was seated beside the victim, managed to escape from the gunman.
